Zahara Ali

Short Bio:

Zahra Ali () is a French-Iraqi sociologist and associate professor of sociology at Rutgers University–Newark, where she founded and directs the Critical Studies of Iraq initiative. Her research focuses on women, gender, and feminist movements in Iraq and the wider Middle East, with a particular focus on the period following the 2003 Iraq War.

Her 2018 book Women and Gender in Iraq: Between Nation-Building and Fragmentation was published by Cambridge University Press in its Cambridge Middle East Studies series and has been translated into Arabic and French. Alongside her academic work, Ali describes herself as a social activist with interests in Muslim feminism, Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
